We support the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), which is the nation’s database to conduct background checks for firearms purchases. Flaws in the NICS system prompted the United States Congress to pass legislation, known as Fix NICS, in March 2018. Vista Outdoor was a strong and vocal supporter of the Fix NICS legislation and continues to advocate for its use and proper implementation. Learn more
FFL Protection Act
We support the Federal Firearm Licensee Protection Act. This legislation would reduce thefts of firearms from retailers through strengthened criminal penalties and mandatory minimum sentences. Safeguarding our nation’s firearms retailers is a top priority and would keep firearms out of the hands of people with bad or criminal intentions. A version of the FFL Protection Act has not yet been introduced in the 117th Congress. Learn more
National Suicide Prevention Hotline
Vista Outdoor was an early supporter of the National Suicide Hotline Improvement Act, a bill that required the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to study the feasibility of designating a simple dialing code to be used for national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline systems. Upon passage of the legislation, further study and action by Congress has led to the creation of a 3-digit number, 9-8-8, which is scheduled for widespread use in mid-2022. Learn more
Recognizing that nearly two-thirds of all firearms deaths are suicides and that half of all suicides in the U.S. are by firearm, the trade association for the ammunition and firearms industry, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, has responded to this problem by partnering with experts in the field of suicidology to learn more and reduce suicides moving forward.
