Shelly Hubbard notices a unique piece on the shelves at a whimsy winery gift shop.
Etched into wood, the plaque reads “I’m outdoorsy. I drink wine on the porch,” which prompts a hearty laugh from Vista Outdoor’s new Vice President of Investor Relations.
While this Minnesota native finds humor in the saying – and likely has a handful of friends who relate to the sign – Shelly is one who in fact does love the outdoors, wine or not. Shelly is a runner, biker and an athlete who enjoys sand volleyball, hiking, kayaking, visiting parks and camping with her family.
Given her preference for the outdoors, paired with an impressive resume, Shelly made the perfect addition to the Vista Outdoor team. She joined in March, 2021, coming to Vista Outdoor from an 8-year stint at Nike, 6 years of which were spent in Investor Relations, a role she says is her favorite.
Prior to Nike, Shelly built a career she refers to as “experience by design,” a theory prompted by seeing a group of 25+ year executives getting laid off early in her career and witnessing the challenge to find the next steps when experience was siloed. Lesson learned: build a robust background.
After earning her degree in Finance, specializing in Investment Management from the University of Minnesota, Shelly got her Series 7 and 63 licenses. She worked in investment management early in her career, eventually moving to a financial services company to become a business analyst. Shelly gained experience across multiple industries including financial services, credit reporting, consumer goods and healthcare. While working full time leading FP&A and Investor Relations at a healthcare firm in Southern California, she carved out time to earn an MBA from Pepperdine. In each position at the various companies, Shelly has oscillated between corporate finance, strategy and investor relations.
Robust as her background is, but in all experiences in all the companies, one role stood out to her.
“Investor Relations is what I really love. With capital market fluctuations, changing macro-economic conditions and consumer behavior, no day is ever the same. There is always something new in the marketplace. I love developing a compelling message about what’s going on with the company and engaging with shareholders to drive awareness of Vista Outdoor.”
Shelly recently moved back to Minnesota from Portland and is settled with her husband, daughter and son in Plymouth, MN. Shelly met her husband Ryan, a former Gopher football player, in college at the University of Minnesota. The couple has a 22-year-old graduate of the University of Oregon and a 5-year-old starting kindergarten his fall. The family enjoys traveling together, whether it be day trips or a destination vacation. They also spend time outdoors, going on walks, playing with the dog, going to the park and exploring new places.
With everything on her plate, from work to family, the move and outdoor adventures, you probably won’t catch her on the porch with a glass of wine, but rest assured, she is hard at work building Vista’s reputation and living out the brand’s purpose in her personal life.
