Federal Keeps it Local

Supporting the community in and around Anoka, Minnesota has always been important to Federal. And now, probably more than ever, as our neighbors continue to work through the changes in households due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Federal donated $5,000 to the Anoka County Brotherhood Council (ACBC) Emergency Food Shelf. In the last two months, the number of families served has grown by 33 percent.

ACBC Executive Director Stephanie Lehman explains, “COVID-19 has brought many challenges to our organization. Our normal shopping model has been turned into a drive-thru model which means not only do we need to be more efficient with our processes and our food purchases, we need to be strategic about space, staff, and volunteer needs. Families are given the same access to healthy food such as fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, dairy, shelf-stable, bakery, hygiene and cleaning items, averaging 100-lbs. per family.”

ACBC Food Shelf was founded in 1971 to provide emergency food and clothing to families in need in the communities of Anoka, Coon Rapids, Andover, Ramsey, Champlin, Nowthen, and the surrounding area. In 2019 we served 10,602 families.  Current programs are:

  • Monthly Food Shelf, currently a drive-thru distribution, averaging 700+ families per month (and growing)
  • Monthly Outreach Program delivering groceries to 70+ homebound individuals
  • Weekly Program for those experiencing homelessness
  • Members of ACBC food shelf accept donation check from Federal's senior director of operations, Erik Carlson.
