This year was the 26th Annual South Dakota Youth Goose Hunt. What a spectacular event! Typically, there are anywhere from 100-200 youth hunters (ages 12-16) over the weekend divided up among six to eight decoy spreads each day. Local landowners donate access to some of the best fields in the area and mentors volunteer their time to guide the youth during the entire weekend. Local businesses and other companies donate food and gear to ensure the hunt runs smoothly and the youth are outfitted for success.
Although Mother Nature seemed to be working against the event producing extremely cold conditions ranging from -5 to -17 degrees, with wind chills up to -30 degrees, as well as the lowest bird counts on record for this time of year, they still managed to have a successful hunt with close to 100 youth hunters each taking home at least one goose.
